JOHANNESBURG, Sept 25 (Alliance News) – A 20-year-old American woman, Brook Cheuvront from North Carolina, has died while hiking on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa.
The body was recovered after she was reported missing on Saturday, authorities confirmed on Monday.
Cheuvront, a student, went missing when the tracking app she was using stopped updating, and friends could no longer contact her, according to SANParks spokesman JP Louw.
An initial search was conducted by rangers, wilderness search and rescue teams, and trail runners, but it was called off late Saturday due to practical limitations.
The search resumed on Sunday with the assistance of an aircraft, which located her body.
The cause of death remains unclear, and an inquest has been opened by South African authorities. Officials have advised against hiking alone, recommending that people hike in groups of at least four.
