Sydney, March 11 (Alliance News): Australian utility companies are working urgently to restore electricity to over 120,000 homes and businesses left without power after Cyclone Alfred battered the east coast with strong winds and flooding.
The cyclone, which lingered offshore before making landfall as a tropical low on Saturday, caused extensive damage over a 400-kilometer stretch of coastline across Queensland and New South Wales. The storm claimed one life after a 61-year-old man’s vehicle was swept into a flooded river.
While weather conditions have improved, southeast Queensland remains the hardest hit, with 118,000 properties still without power. Energex, the regional power provider, has deployed over 2,000 staff and aerial assessments to expedite restoration efforts, aiming to reconnect 95% of affected properties by Friday.
The storm caused record-breaking outages in the state, affecting more than 450,000 premises.
In neighboring New South Wales, around 7,600 homes and businesses are still in the dark. Essential Energy warned that power disruptions may persist as crews work to repair extensive damage caused by strong winds, heavy rain, and fallen debris.
