Flooding in Nigeria Sweeps Deadly Reptiles into Communities, Displaces Thousands

ABUJA, Sep 12 (Alliance News): Severe flooding in northern Nigeria, triggered by an overflowing dam, has devastated communities and a state-run zoo in Borno State.

The floodwaters swept animals, including dangerous reptiles like crocodiles and snakes, into nearby neighborhoods, posing a serious threat to residents. More than 80% of the wildlife in the zoo was killed.

Efforts are underway to recapture the animals, but the flooding has left significant damage, with large parts of Maiduguri, the state capital, still submerged.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported that this is the worst flooding in Maiduguri in 30 years, displacing around 200,000 people.

Flooding across Nigeria has claimed 229 lives and displaced over 386,000 people, with northern Nigeria being the hardest hit.
