UNITED NATIONS, Oct 25(Alliance News): The United Nations’ latest Emissions Gap Report warns that global warming could exceed 3°C above pre-industrial levels by the end of this century if current climate policies continue, far surpassing the 1.5°C limit outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Projected temperature increases could reach as high as 3.1°C by 2100, emphasizing the need for drastic emissions cuts.
The report highlights the requirement for a 42% reduction in global emissions by 2030 and a 57% reduction by 2035 to keep global warming within safer bounds.
“We’re teetering on a planetary tightrope,” stated UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “Either leaders bridge the emissions gap, or we plunge headlong into climate disaster.”
The findings come ahead of COP29 in Azerbaijan, where global leaders will meet to advance climate actions.
With global greenhouse gas emissions rising by 1.3% from 2022 to 2023, reaching a record 57.1 gigatonnes of CO₂ equivalent, pressure is mounting for countries—particularly the G20 nations—to strengthen climate commitments.
