Switzerland’s “Burqa Ban” to Take Effect on January 1

Zurich, Nov 7 (Alliance News): Switzerland’s controversial facial covering ban, widely known as the “burqa ban,” will come into effect on January 1, the government announced on Wednesday.

The measure, narrowly passed in a 2021 referendum, has drawn strong criticism from Muslim associations and other groups.

It was introduced by the same organization behind a 2009 referendum banning new minarets in the country.

The Federal Council stated that individuals who violate the ban will face fines of up to 1,000 Swiss francs (approximately $1,144).

However, the ban will not apply on planes, in diplomatic and consular premises, or in places of worship and other sacred sites.

Exceptions to the ban will be made for health, safety, cultural customs, weather conditions, artistic, entertainment, or advertising purposes.

Additionally, facial coverings may be permitted for personal protection or during demonstrations, provided public order is maintained and approval from the relevant authorities is granted.
