Sydney’s New Year’s Fireworks Will Go Ahead After Train Workers’ Agreement

SYDNEY, Dec 24 (Alliance News): Sydney’s iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks show will proceed as planned after train workers and the government reached an 11th-hour agreement on Tuesday, averting a potential disruption.

Up to 250,000 people were expected to travel to Sydney to witness the spectacular event, and concerns had arisen regarding train services to safely transport the crowds home afterwards.

Train workers had initially threatened industrial action due to ongoing pay disputes, leading to fears that the fireworks celebration might be canceled.

However, an agreement was reached just an hour after a hearing at the Fair Work Commission, with industrial action officially withdrawn.

New South Wales Transport Minister Jo Haylen reassured the public, stating that the celebrations, along with key events like Christmas, the Sydney Test cricket match, and New Year’s Eve, would now proceed without interruption.

Toby Warnes, state secretary of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, clarified that the union never intended to disrupt the major events, and further pay negotiations are set to take place in the coming weeks.
