HONG KONG, Dec 20 (Alliance News): China is set to expand its aviation dominance with the construction of the world’s largest airport on a man-made island.
The Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport, currently being built off the country’s northeast coast, will eventually cover 20 square kilometers and feature four runways and a massive 900,000-square-meter terminal.
Expected to handle 80 million passengers annually across 540,000 flights, the airport is slated to open in phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion in 2035.
Once completed, the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport will surpass both Hong Kong International Airport and Japan’s Kansai Airport to become the world’s largest airport located on an artificial island.
The construction has faced significant challenges, including complex geological conditions and tight schedules. Despite these obstacles, the airport is poised to bolster Dalian’s status as a critical transport hub due to its proximity to Japan and South Korea.
This project is part of China’s broader efforts to become the world’s largest air travel market, with the country’s second airport, Daxing, having opened in 2019.
The need for increased infrastructure is apparent, as China aims to have 450 airports by 2035 to meet the soaring demand for air travel.
