WASHINGTON, Jan 15 (Alliance News): Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial nominee for Secretary of Defence, endured intense scrutiny during his Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday, yet emerged with critical Republican backing, bolstering his chances for confirmation.
Hegseth, a former Fox News host and decorated veteran, faced fierce questioning over his inexperience, past opposition to women in combat, alleged drinking, and financial mismanagement at veterans’ organizations.
He defended himself, denying wrongdoing and pledging to adhere to high standards if confirmed.
During the four-hour hearing, Hegseth softened previous stances, including his opposition to women in combat roles, stating he would ensure all service members meet strict merit-based standards.
Despite pointed criticism from Democrats like Senator Jack Reed and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Hegseth avoided major missteps.
Gillibrand lambasted Hegseth for his previous remarks about women, accusing him of degrading female service members. Hegseth responded by pledging to support all qualified members of the military, regardless of gender.
Republicans largely rallied behind Hegseth, with Senator Joni Ernst — initially speculated as a potential critic — offering her endorsement.
Other Republicans, including Senator Roger Wicker, dismissed concerns as political attacks, describing Hegseth as “unconventional” but capable.
If confirmed, Hegseth would be one of the most contentious appointees to lead the Pentagon, with a vote expected to pass by a narrow margin, a stark contrast to the bipartisan support for previous nominees.
