UNITED NATIONS, Dec 3 (Alliance News): China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, formally submitted a statement and chart on the baselines of Huangyan Island’s territorial waters to Acting Deputy Secretary-General Matthias Matthias.
The documents, provided on behalf of the Chinese government, will be published on the United Nations website.
The statement reaffirms Huangyan Island as an integral part of China. On November 10, the Chinese government issued a declaration outlining the baselines of the territorial waters of Huangyan Island in alignment with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and other international laws.
Under UNCLOS, coastal states are required to submit baseline charts to the UN Secretary-General to define the territorial sea and contiguous zone. China emphasized its compliance with these regulations while asserting its sovereignty over Huangyan Island.
