New Zealand Introduces Remote Work Visas to Attract Tourists

WELLINGTON, Jan 27 (Alliance News): New Zealand announced new visa rules on Monday, allowing holidaymakers to work remotely while visiting, as part of efforts to boost tourism and revitalize its economy.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford said the visitor visa would allow remote work starting January 27, aiming to attract digital nomads and long-term travelers.

“This opens a brand-new market of tourists for New Zealand. We want people to view our country as the ideal destination to visit and work simultaneously,” she stated.

Stanford acknowledged that while uptake numbers remain uncertain, digital nomad visas have seen “extraordinary popularity” in other countries. She noted that these visitors are expected to stay longer, spend more, and potentially develop long-term ties with New Zealand.

New Zealand’s economy fell into a technical recession in late 2024, and the government has sought innovative measures to stimulate growth. Tourism, a vital sector, remains below pre-pandemic levels, with international arrivals at 86% of 2019 numbers.

Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis expressed optimism about the initiative, calling it a bold step to position New Zealand as a hub for global talent. “We hope this will inspire individuals and businesses to strengthen their connections with New Zealand,” she said.
