South Korea’s Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol Faces Court Hearing Over Insurrection Charges

SEOUL, Jan 18 (Alliance News): Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol attended a court hearing on Saturday to contest a request by investigators for an extension of his detention on charges of insurrection.

Yoon, the country’s first sitting president to be arrested, faces accusations related to his declaration of martial law on December 3. Investigators filed for a detention warrant on Friday, seeking to extend Yoon’s custody by up to 20 days.

Despite refusing to answer questions from investigators, Yoon arrived at the Seoul Western District Court for the hearing, supported by a convoy of cars and police motorbikes. His lawyer stated that Yoon attended the hearing to defend the legitimacy of the martial law and clarify that no insurrection had occurred.

Under South Korean law, insurrection is a serious offense, and even sitting presidents are not immune to facing such charges.

The court will issue its decision either on Saturday or Sunday.
