SEOUL, Dec 24 (Alliance News): South Korea’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party (DP), announced plans on Tuesday to immediately proceed with impeachment proceedings against Acting President Han Duck-soo, just days after impeaching President Yoon Suk Yeol.
This move follows Han’s decision to delay the approval of a special counsel investigation into Yoon’s failed attempt to impose martial law, a contentious issue that led to Yoon’s impeachment on December 14.
Park Chan-dae, the DP’s floor leader, accused Han of purposefully stalling by refusing to put the legislation on the cabinet’s agenda, which he claims is an attempt to buy time.
Despite the delay, the DP passed legislation earlier this month to appoint a special counsel to investigate Yoon, his wife, and the insurrection allegations against the president. With the DP holding a majority in parliament, they plan to submit a bill to impeach Han soon.
The People Power Party, Yoon’s ruling party, has accused the DP of pressuring Han and warned that impeachment could damage South Korea’s international standing and harm the economy.
Meanwhile, Yoon, who is awaiting a Constitutional Court ruling on his impeachment, has not appeared publicly since December 14, and is unlikely to comply with authorities’ summons for questioning on December 25.
