Xi Jinping Reiterates Taiwan Reunification Goals Amid National Celebrations

Hong Kong, Oct 01 (Alliance News): As China prepares to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic, President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed his commitment to achieving “complete reunification” with Taiwan.

During a state banquet held on the eve of the national holiday, Xi emphasized that this goal is an “irreversible trend” and “the common aspiration of the people,” asserting that “no one can stop the march of history,” as reported by the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Despite never having controlled Taiwan, Beijing claims it as part of its territory and has vowed to “reunify” the self-governing democracy by any means necessary.

Many in Taiwan, however, identify as distinctly Taiwanese and oppose any integration with Communist China.

Since the Chinese civil war in 1949, the two regions have been governed separately, with the nationalists retreating to Taiwan while the communists established power in Beijing.

Xi, noted for his assertive leadership, has intensified rhetoric regarding Taiwan, raising fears of potential military confrontation.

He described Taiwan as “China’s sacred territory” and called for stronger economic and cultural exchanges while opposing “Taiwan independence” movements.

The Chinese government has labeled Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te a “dangerous separatist,” escalating tensions since his inauguration in May.

In response to perceived threats, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reported heightened military activity, including missile launches detected deep within China.

These developments follow China’s recent test of an intercontinental ballistic missile, signaling a show of force aimed at the U.S. and its allies.

As tensions rise, U.S. President Joe Biden approved an additional $567 million military support package for Taiwan, marking the largest aid to the island to date.

This funding will provide defense articles and military training, reinforcing America’s commitment to supporting Taiwan amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.
