Alabama Executes Man Using Nitrogen Gas in Controversial Method

WASHINGTON, Nov 22 (Alliance News): Alabama executed Carey Grayson, 49, using nitrogen hypoxia on Thursday, marking the third use of this controversial execution method in the state this year.

Grayson, convicted of the 1994 murder of hitchhiker Vickie Deblieux, was pronounced dead at 6:33 pm local time at the William Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore.

Grayson, who chose nitrogen gas over lethal injection, was sentenced to death for the brutal murder of 37-year-old Deblieux, who was killed while hitchhiking from Tennessee to Louisiana.

Court documents revealed that Grayson and three others beat, stabbed, and mutilated Deblieux’s body.

The execution method, which involves pumping nitrogen gas into a mask, causes suffocation and has drawn criticism from human rights experts.

United Nations experts called for a halt to the practice, claiming it could amount to “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.”

This marks the third execution by nitrogen hypoxia in Alabama, following the state’s first in January and a second in September.
