Blinken Urges Israel to Translate Military Gains in Gaza into Lasting Strategic Success

Saudi Arabia, Oct 23 (Alliance News): U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged Israel to convert its military achievements in Gaza into long-term strategic success, while also calling on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to improve the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in the region.

Speaking in Tel Aviv before heading to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, Blinken acknowledged that Israel has already achieved many of its key military objectives by significantly weakening Hamas’ military capacity. He noted that this progress could pave the way for a lasting resolution to the conflict.

“There are two main priorities now: securing the release of hostages and ending the war with a clear plan for what comes next,” Blinken said. He pointed to the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar as a pivotal moment, describing Sinwar as the primary obstacle to a potential hostage deal.

Addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Blinken noted that while some improvements had been made, “more needs to be done.” The U.S. had earlier issued a letter to the Israeli government, urging it to enhance the humanitarian response or risk facing potential limitations on military aid.

Blinken also emphasized the importance of preventing the conflict from escalating further. He called on Israel to de-escalate tensions with Hezbollah in Lebanon and warned against “greater escalation” in retaliation for Iran’s missile attack on Israel in early October.
