HALLE, Jan 26, 2025 (Alliance News): US tech billionaire Elon Musk has publicly backed Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in a video address at a campaign rally in Halle, ahead of the country’s upcoming federal election.
Speaking to thousands of AfD supporters, Musk described the party as “the best hope for the future of Germany,” drawing sharp criticism from mainstream political leaders who accused him of meddling in European politics.
Musk emphasized AfD’s opposition to centralized European Union policies, advocating for greater national self-determination.
“The German people are an ancient nation with deep historical roots. Even Julius Caesar admired the German tribes,” Musk remarked, calling on attendees to “fight, fight, fight” for Germany’s future.
His public endorsement comes as the AfD enjoys record polling numbers, reaching around 20% ahead of the February 23 elections.
The party, known for its anti-immigration stance, climate change denial, and opposition to gender politics, has sparked controversy for breaking post-war taboos against the far right in Germany.
Musk’s recent actions, including remarks on his social media platform X and a gesture interpreted by some as a Nazi salute, have alarmed political figures across Europe. Critics argue that his involvement risks fueling divisions and undermining democratic values.
The AfD’s closest rival, the conservative CDU/CSU alliance, currently leads with approximately 30% support in national polls.
Musk’s ties to former US President Donald Trump, who appointed him to oversee a new “government efficiency” department, have further fueled concerns over the tech magnate’s political influence.
