France’s Top Court Upholds Corruption Conviction for Former President Sarkozy

Paris, Dec 19 (Alliance News): France’s highest court has upheld the corruption conviction of former President Nicolas Sarkozy, affirming a lower court’s decision.

Sarkozy, who served as president from 2007 to 2012, was sentenced to one year in prison for corruption charges, with the option to serve the sentence under house arrest, equipped with an electronic bracelet.

The court confirmed that the ruling was final, and Sarkozy’s three-year political disqualification is now in effect. The sentence had been suspended until now, but it has now officially come into force.

Sarkozy, who retired from public life in 2017, has announced plans to challenge the ruling in the European Court of Human Rights, signaling his intent to pursue legal avenues at the international level.
