Qatar, Oct 23 (Alliance News): Iran and Saudi Arabia are planning to conduct joint military exercises in the Red Sea, according to an Iranian report, although Saudi Arabia has not confirmed this. If the exercises proceed, it would mark a historic first for the two regional powers.
Both countries have a history of supporting opposing factions in various conflict zones across the Middle East and severed diplomatic ties in 2016.
However, relations were unexpectedly restored last year after a China-brokered agreement.
Iranian naval commander Admiral Shahram Irani, quoted by Iran’s ISNA news agency, stated, “Saudi Arabia has asked that we organise joint exercises in the Red Sea.”
He added that coordination efforts are underway, with delegations from both nations set to hold consultations on how to proceed with the exercise, though no specific timeline or further details were provided.
As of now, Riyadh has not confirmed its participation in the joint military exercises.
