Israeli, Nov 07 (Alliance News): Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday after months of disagreements over Israel’s military strategy and domestic politics.
In a recorded statement, Netanyahu cited a “crack” in trust between himself and Gallant.
This reshuffle comes at a critical time for Israel, as it faces ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon while bracing for potential retaliation from Iran.
Israel Katz, currently the foreign minister, will take over as defense minister, while Gideon Sa’ar will replace Katz as foreign minister.
Neither Katz nor Sa’ar has significant military experience, though Katz has been part of the cabinet throughout the war.
Gallant’s dismissal follows a public dispute over key issues, including ultra-Orthodox military service, the handling of hostages in Gaza, and the need for an inquiry into Hamas’ October 7 attack.
Gallant, a key figure in Israel’s security efforts, had strong connections with the U.S. administration, particularly with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Gallant responded by emphasizing his commitment to Israel’s security, stating, “The security of Israel has been and will always be my lifelong mission,” while condemning the abandonment of hostages as a mark of shame for Israeli society.
Netanyahu, on the other hand, expressed frustration that their differences had become public and benefited Israel’s enemies.
