SEOUL, Sept 10 (Alliance News): North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced a new policy aimed at exponentially increasing the country’s nuclear arsenal, according to state media KCNA.
Speaking on the anniversary of North Korea’s founding, Kim emphasized the need to enhance the country’s nuclear capabilities to ensure state security against perceived threats, particularly from the United States and its allies.
Kim’s statement reflects North Korea’s ongoing focus on bolstering its nuclear force, which it views as crucial for countering what it describes as a US-led nuclear military bloc in the region.
In response, South Korea’s Deputy Defense Minister for Policy, Cho Chang-rae, along with US and Japanese counterparts, condemned North Korea’s recent advancements in nuclear delivery systems and missile tests.
The three nations reiterated their commitment to trilateral cooperation to maintain regional peace and counter North Korea’s nuclear threats. They announced plans for a second trilateral military exercise, Freedom Edge, to be held soon.
Additionally, South Korea will convene a defense ministerial meeting with the United Nations Command (UNC) members.
The UNC, led by the US military commander in South Korea, is bolstered by Germany’s recent inclusion. Germany’s participation has been criticized by North Korea as escalating tensions, labeling the UNC as an “illegal war organization.”
