North Korean Defector Detained After Attempting to Return Home in Stolen Bus

SEOUL, Oct 04 (Alliance News): A North Korean defector who escaped to South Korea over a decade ago was detained after attempting to re-enter North Korea using a stolen bus, authorities reported.

The incident occurred on the Tongil Bridge, the last border checkpoint where civilians can cross without special permits.

The 35-year-old man drove approximately 800 meters before ramming into barricades. The area is heavily fortified due to its proximity to the demilitarized zone, one of the world’s most militarized borders.

Since moving to South Korea in 2011, the defector had been struggling to find stable employment and a permanent home, expressing a longing for his family back in North Korea.

According to police, he has faced economic difficulties and has struggled to adjust to life in South Korea.

While over 34,000 North Korean defectors have resettled in South Korea since the Korean War, only around 30 have returned to North Korea in the past decade. This case highlights the challenges faced by defectors in assimilating into South Korean society.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, is facing multiple charges, including vehicle theft and violations of the National Security Law.

CCTV footage captured him checking parked buses before stealing one. This incident marks the first known attempt to cross the bridge in a stolen vehicle, although there have been other attempts by defectors in recent years.
