Protests Erupt at Australian Defense Expo, Dozens Arrested Amid Clashes with Police

AUSTRALIA, Sept 11 (Alliance News): Dozens of protesters were arrested after violent clashes with police outside a major defense expo in Melbourne on Wednesday. The Land Forces international exposition, which showcases military equipment and weapons, became the target of anti-arms industry demonstrations, with protesters setting fire to trash cans and throwing projectiles at police. In response, authorities fired rubber bullets and deployed pepper spray to control the crowd.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton defended the force’s actions, labeling the protests as violent and “appalling.” He confirmed that non-lethal munitions were used to repel protesters, some of whom had thrown low-level acid at officers. At least 39 people were arrested on charges including assault and arson.

The protest was organized by Disrupt Land Forces, a group opposing arms sales and militarized repression. Many demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans against violent conflicts.
