Taliban Seeks Membership in BRICS Economic Forum

KABUL, Sep 25 (Alliance News): Afghanistan’s Taliban government is eager to join the BRICS economic forum, a spokesperson announced ahead of the upcoming summit in Russia.
The BRICS summit, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is scheduled to take place from October 22-24 in Kazan, Russia.

Hamdullah Fitrat, a deputy spokesperson for the Taliban government, stated, “Countries with major resources and the world’s biggest economies are associated with the BRICS forum, especially Russia, India, and China.

Currently, we have good economic ties and commercial exchanges with them. We are keen to expand our relations and participate in the economic forums of the BRICS.”

Although the Taliban authorities have not been officially recognized by any country, their relations with founding BRICS members, including China and Russia, have been on the rise.

The BRICS group has recently expanded to include Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia, but has yet to publicly respond to the Taliban’s interest.

A spokesperson from the Afghanistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs remarked that they had “no information so far” about any invitation to the event.

Additionally, both Moscow and Beijing have shown readiness to invest in commercial projects within Afghanistan and to cooperate with the Taliban in combating the Islamic State Khorasan, also known as Daesh.
