WASHINGTON, Jan 22 (Alliance News): US President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that additional sanctions against Russia could be imminent if President Vladimir Putin refuses to engage in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
While Trump refrained from providing specifics on any new sanctions, he highlighted the heavy economic pressure that has already been imposed on Russia by the United States since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
He also reiterated his administration’s ongoing review of the possibility of sending more military aid to Ukraine.
Trump stressed the importance of increased European Union support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. “The EU should be doing more,” he remarked.
Trump also emphasized that his administration is in talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, adding that discussions with President Putin are scheduled to take place in the near future.
Trump revealed that he had called Chinese President Xi Jinping to urge intervention to halt the war in Ukraine.
Although he noted that Xi has not made substantial efforts in this regard, Trump said, “He’s got a lot of power, like we have a lot of power. I said, ‘You ought to get it settled.’”
