ABU DHABI, Sep 03 (Alliance News): Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, has announced a pardon for 57 Bangladeshi citizens convicted for participating in protests against the Hasina Wajid government.
Under this decision, the sentences of these individuals will be annulled, and they will be deported from the UAE.
The group includes three individuals sentenced to life imprisonment and 53 sentenced to 10 years in prison. One person who entered the UAE illegally was sentenced to 11 years.
The convictions were related to charges of organizing illegal demonstrations and disrupting public order.
Recent reports suggest that the UAE President was approached by Bangladesh’s interim President, Mohammad Yunus, prior to this pardon decision.
This follows a period of unrest in Bangladesh, where student protests in July led to the resignation and flight of Sheikh Hasina Wajid to India.
In her absence, the Army Chief has assumed control and appointed Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus as the head of the interim government.
