Ukraine, Sept 13 (Alliance News): Ukrainian forces, after launching a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region last month, are now facing a fierce Russian counteroffensive.
Despite initial gains of around 30 kilometers into Russian territory, Ukraine’s advance has slowed, with heavy casualties reported on both sides.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Russia’s “counteroffensive actions,” as Moscow claims to have recaptured 10 settlements in the region.
Ukrainian soldiers involved in the operation describe intense battles and rising difficulties, with some questioning the timing of the offensive while key areas in eastern Ukraine remain under threat.
Ukrainian forces estimate that Russia has deployed around 30,000 troops to the region, including elite Wagner mercenaries and Chechen special forces. Despite the setbacks, Ukraine continues to hold the majority of the territory gained in the early days of the incursion.
