US, China Resume Military Talks Amid Asia-Pacific Tensions

HONG KONG, Sept 11 (Alliance News): American and Chinese military commanders held a crucial call on Tuesday, marking a significant step toward restoring high-level military communications that were severed over two years ago. US Indo-Pacific Command Adm.

Samuel Paparo and China’s Gen. Wu Yanan, commander of the PLA’s Southern Theater, discussed regional tensions via video conference.

This dialogue is part of ongoing efforts to manage the escalating rivalry between the two powers, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, where disputes over the South China Sea and Taiwan remain volatile.

The call, described as constructive by US officials, emphasized the importance of open communication to prevent misunderstandings and reduce risks of military miscalculations.

The meeting follows several recent unsafe encounters between Chinese and US allies in the region, according to the White House.

Paparo urged China to comply with international norms to maintain operational safety and avoid coercive tactics.

The talks represent a cautious but meaningful step in rekindling military communication, which China had cut off following a controversial visit by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in 2022.
