Russian, Sep 30 (Alliance News): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent visit to the White House may have been his final opportunity to persuade a receptive American administration about his country’s war objectives, especially with the upcoming U.S. presidential election looming.
During his visit on Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized a significant divide between the Biden administration’s approach to Ukraine and that of former President Donald Trump, who has hinted at a more conciliatory stance towards Russia.
In a press appearance alongside Zelensky, Harris asserted, “In candor, I share with you, Mr. President, there are some in my country who would instead force Ukraine to give up large parts of its sovereign territory.
These proposals are the same as those of Putin, and let us be clear, they are not proposals for peace. Instead, they are proposals for surrender, which is dangerous and unacceptable.” While Harris did not name specific individuals, her comments suggested a clear critique of Trump’s potential policies.
Zelensky’s visit comes at a crucial time as he aims to secure increased military assistance from the U.S. to bolster Ukraine’s chances against Russian aggression.
He has been working to establish relationships with various American political figures, including Republicans, as he navigates the complex landscape of U.S. politics leading up to the November elections.
On the same day, Trump announced that he would be meeting with Zelensky in New York the following morning.
He had previously shared what seemed to be a private message requesting the meeting, indicating the ongoing dialogue between the two leaders.
While Trump expressed optimism about negotiating a resolution to the conflict, he refrained from elaborating on specifics, leaving open the question of whether he supports ceding territory to Russia as a potential solution.
Ahead of Zelensky’s arrival, President Joe Biden had ordered a surge of military assistance to Ukraine, directing the Pentagon to allocate the remaining funding approved by Congress.
“This will strengthen Ukraine’s position in future negotiations,” Biden stated during a joint appearance with Zelensky.
He also reiterated the U.S. commitment to supporting Ukraine’s path toward EU and NATO membership and emphasized the importance of continued reforms to counter corruption.
As the political landscape shifts in the U.S., with the possibility of a Trump victory posing a threat to ongoing support for Ukraine, the urgency of Zelensky’s message and the need for timely military assistance are paramount.
Ukrainian officials, along with many in the U.S., recognize that time is of the essence as they prepare for potential changes in American policy.
