IBADAN, Dec 20 (Alliance News): A tragic crowd crush at a funfair in Ibadan, southwest Nigeria, resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children, with six others critically injured, according to police reports.
The incident occurred at the Islamic school where the Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WING) organized the event, expecting 5,000 children under 13 to attend.
Eight individuals, including the main sponsor, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu expressed his condolences, urging the Oyo State Government to prevent similar tragedies.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also expressed sorrow, promising accountability for those involved.
The investigation has been transferred to the homicide division of the state’s police department.
This incident is the latest in a series of deadly crowd surges in Nigeria, highlighting concerns over crowd management at large events.
