Masato Kanda Elected as New ADB President

TOKYO, Nov 28 (Alliance News): Masato Kanda, a special adviser to Japan’s Finance Minister, has been unanimously elected as the 11th president of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Kanda, 59, will assume office on February 24, 2025, succeeding Masatsugu Asakawa, whose term ends on February 23, 2025.

Kanda will complete the remaining term of his predecessor, which concludes on November 23, 2026.

Fabio Panetta, Chairman of the ADB Board of Governors, praised Kanda’s extensive expertise in international financial affairs and leadership in multilateral settings, expressing confidence in his ability to address global economic challenges and enhance international cooperation.

Kanda’s distinguished career spans nearly four decades, with key roles in Japan’s Ministry of Finance, including Vice Minister for International Affairs. He is recognized for his contributions to fiscal policy, macroeconomic strategy, and university reform. Under his leadership, Japan made a record $1 billion contribution to the Asian Development Fund’s 14th replenishment.

Since 2016, Kanda has also served as Director-General at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), solidifying his reputation as a leader in economic development.
