Sudan Airstrike Kills Over 20 Civilians as Conflict Rages

SUDAN, Sept 10 (Alliance News): A devastating airstrike in southeastern Sudan has killed at least 21 civilians and wounded 63 others, according to authorities in Sennar state.

The attack, which targeted civilian areas, is part of the ongoing civil war between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Sennar’s acting governor, Tawfiq Muhammad Ali, confirmed the attack on Sunday, which was attributed to the RSF.

Activist group Emergency Lawyers, which tracks human rights violations, reported a higher death toll of over 30, including civilians in a market and other public areas.

The RSF, which controls most of the city, has not yet responded to the allegations. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have also been accused of civilian casualties in a nearby airstrike on al-Souki town.

Since the conflict erupted in April 2023, more than 18,000 people have been killed, and over 10 million displaced.

The UN has condemned both sides for potential war crimes and called for an independent force to protect civilians, recommendations which Sudan’s foreign ministry rejected.
