Trump Warns of Sanctions on Russia if Putin Rejects Peace Talks

WASHINGTON, Jan 22 (Alliance News): US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that his administration is considering imposing further sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to engage in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump did not provide specifics on additional sanctions but emphasized that Russia has already faced heavy penalties since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

He also criticized the European Union, stating that it should be doing more to support Ukraine during this ongoing conflict.

“We’re talking to (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky, we’re going to be talking with President Putin very soon,” Trump remarked, indicating potential diplomatic engagement with both leaders.

In his diplomatic efforts, Trump revealed that he urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to take more action to mediate the Ukraine situation, noting that Xi “has a lot of power” and should use it to bring the conflict to a close.

However, Trump said that despite the conversation, little progress has been made on the matter.
