Rome, Oct 4 (Alliance News): More than 180 passengers were safely evacuated from a Ryanair Boeing passenger jet at Brindisi Airport in southern Italy after the plane caught fire while preparing for takeoff on Thursday.
This marks the second safety incident involving the airline this week.
The Ryanair flight FR8826, bound for Turin, was halted on the runway after cabin crew observed fumes outside the aircraft.
All 184 passengers and crew members were quickly evacuated without injury. Brindisi Airport, temporarily shut down after the incident, reopened three hours later.
Ryanair confirmed that the passengers were later flown to their destination on a replacement aircraft.
This incident comes just two days after a Ryanair flight arriving at Milan Bergamo Airport from Barcelona experienced a tire blowout during landing, causing the temporary closure of the airport.
Both events have prompted Italian lawmakers to call for an inquiry into Ryanair’s safety practices.
The incident at Brindisi is the latest in a string of issues for the airline, with previous incidents this year including emergency landings and technical failures.
Italian MPs Andrea Caroppo and Mauro D’Attis have urged the National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) to investigate the airline’s safety protocols.
